What is a Photo-Assistant?

A photo assistant is a second set of eyes, hands and ears for the photographer. Assistants are in some cases the teachers, tech support and knowledge base of the industry; and the first person that a photographer will go to for information on equipment, cameras, film, production, and location help or ideas.
The photo assistant will set up the cameras, load the film, log the shot film, set up the lights, take meter readings, do lighting tests and Polaroid’s, color correct the lights, take tech notes for every roll of film on every shot, build the sets, help the stylists, pamper the client, and often focus and frame the shot so that all the photographer has to do is show up and push the button. At times it’s your job to be a buffer between the photographer and the client. Keeping the client happy, well fed and out of the photographer’s way can be the most important part of the job.
The photo assistant will be the first to the studio or location in the morning, he or she will be the one to load the cargo van and drive all night to the desert and setup before sun rise.  He’ll be the last to leave a location after packing everything up and checking that nothing was left behind by any of the crew. Assistants handle all of the equipment when traveling via air and on international flights deal with the carnet (import export documents) at customs.
Assistants also know who’s naughty and who’s nice in the industry. Read more >>>
